A DOUBLET FIT FOR A PRINCE

"Prince Charming" from Once Upon a Time

PURPOSE:

Cosplay for Anime North convention in Toronto

MATERIALS USED:

Suede, broadcloth, marine vinyl, secondhand leather pants, lacing, 200 eyelets

The original costume from ABC's Once Upon a Time, as worn by Josh Dallas.

The finished cosplay, complete with doublet, shirt, riding pants, boots, and a hand-made leather sheath.

The first body block (left) was altered and used to create the first mockup (right), which follows the same style lines as the finished cosplay.

The mockup for the doublet, sewn together to test the fit.

Riding pants were created by sewing together two pairs of secondhand pants, and adding a laced-up closure at the left hip.

A Regency-era pattern was used to create this billowing shirt, complete with underarm gores and a front placket. Threads were pulled from the fabric to create the frayed trim at the collar.

Approximately 200 eyelets were used in the costume, as the six torso pieces are laced together at the front, back and sides. The shoulder pieces create the illusion of a broader frame (very helpful when one is trying to look like Josh Dallas!)
