LET DOWN YOUR GOLDEN HAIR

The Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel

PURPOSE:

Original costume for a photoshoot at the Pioneer Heritage Tower in Kitchener

MATERIALS USED:

Tie-dyed silk, metal findings and accessories, polypropylene rope

This original costume was hand-drafted, and includes a cowl neck and slit sleeves. The colour of Rapunzel's dress was inspired by the blooms of the rapunzel plant, which vary from light blue to purple. A tie-dyed silk was used for the costume, and was decorated with gold metal findings and accessories.

The finished braid, made from inexpensive polypropylene rope, is over 50 feet long. None of the strands were ever cut: large spools were used to organize the rope while straightening and braiding. Smaller braids were wound through the larger braid for support and texture.

The hair was unraveled and straightened using a low-heat iron. Five ropes were used to create the final effect.

A close look at one of the slit sleeves, decorated with a golden butterfly.

Ornate metal cuffs also adorn each sleeve. Rapunzel's serpent belt (like her long hair) symbolizes fertility and infinity.
