LET DOWN YOUR GOLDEN HAIR
The Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel
PURPOSE:
Original costume for a photoshoot at the Pioneer Heritage Tower in Kitchener
MATERIALS USED:
Tie-dyed silk, metal findings and accessories, polypropylene rope
![]() This original costume was hand-drafted, and includes a cowl neck and slit sleeves. The colour of Rapunzel's dress was inspired by the blooms of the rapunzel plant, which vary from light blue to purple. A tie-dyed silk was used for the costume, and was decorated with gold metal findings and accessories. | ![]() The finished braid, made from inexpensive polypropylene rope, is over 50 feet long. None of the strands were ever cut: large spools were used to organize the rope while straightening and braiding. Smaller braids were wound through the larger braid for support and texture. | ![]() The hair was unraveled and straightened using a low-heat iron. Five ropes were used to create the final effect. |
